What is truth?

Objective truth verses subjective preferences or opinions

Some people believe they can define their own truth. Or they say there is no absolute truth. Others say what is true for you is your truth and what is true for me is my truth. These are incorrect statements regarding truth. Theses statements also express an incorrect view of reality. There is such a  thing as truth. Truth is what corresponds to or reflects reality. Instead, there is an objective truth that corresponds to reality. Truth is based on an object or standard outside of yourself. Like when a carpenter is measuring twice to make sure his 30 inch measurement is correct, the 30 inch measurement is objectively true based on the 30 inch measurement standard on the tape measure regardless of whether the carpenter or anyone else in their opinions think the measurement is truly 30 inches. Truth is not your own virtual reality. Nor is truth is not your subjective preferences or opinions. The following statements about truth are self-refuting statements.. To demonstrate this, you only need to ask the following questions. STATEMENT 1: “I can define my own truth.” RESPONSE: “Can my truth be that I can define your truth?” STATEMENT 2:  “There is no absolute truth.“ RESPONSE: “Is that statement an absolute truth?” STATEMENT 3: “What is true for you is your truth and what is true for me is my truth.” RESPONSE: “Is that statement true for everyone?” You can see that these statements are self-refuting when you apply each statement to itself.

Religious truth

Different religions have different contradictory beliefs about God. For example, in Hinduism, there are many different Gods. In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, there is only one God. Christians believe that God came to earth in the human form of Jesus as the truth about God, the only way to God, and to offer you eternal life with God (John 14:6). But Hindus, Jews, and Muslims don’t believe Jesus is God. All the religions may be wrong, but they can’t all be right. Its up to you to investigate which religion best corresponds to reality. From a Christian worldview perspective, one of God’s attributes is truth. The following are two examples of Christian truth; the first  from the Old Testament and the second from the New Testament. “Into Your hand I entrust my spirit; You have redeemed me, Lord, God of truth” (Psalm 31:5 NASB). Jesus came to us as a person of God as the true way to God the Father. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father (God) except through Me” (John 14:6. NASB) Therefore, Christians can look to God for an objective standard of what is truth.
