WILL THERE BE MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN?

WILL THERE BE MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN?

Human marriage.

No. God created marriage to alleviate loneliness (Genesis 2:18) and for purposes of populating the earth (Genesis 9:7). However, there will be no loneliness in heaven because Christians will experience perfect fellowship with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and other Christians in heaven.

Heavenly marriage.

Jesus said that resurrected Christians will not be married in heaven. They will be like angels, meaning that angels are not married and do no procreate, not that Christians will become angels (Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25). But there will be a different type of marriage in heaven relating to God’s relationship with those who believe, receive, trust, and follow Jesus

In the Old Testament, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah and said, “For your Maker is your husband” (Isaiah 54:5 NKJV). God also spoke through the prophet Hosea and added, “I (God) will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and justice, in lovingkindness and mercy; I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, and you shall know the LORD” (Hosea 2:19-20 NKJV). In the New Testament, Jesus also said that human marriage would end because it fulfilled its purpose to anticipate and reflect the ultimate perfect marriage between Jesus Christ and his bride (Ephesians 5:23-32). Therefore, there will be one marriage between Jesus Christ and his bride, the Christian church, which is all Christians. So all Christians will together be part of the perfect marriage to Jesus. Even though Christians will not be married to their spouses in heaven, they most likely still will be closest to their Christian spouses, family members, and friends. They will bring to heaven their memories which will connect them to their prior relationships. From there, they will develop new friendships without ever losing their old core relationships. Your prior relationships will be better than they were on earth, because the sin that causes conflicts in relationships will not exist in heaven (Revelation 21:4, 27).
