The following is a sampling of famous early scientists that were all Christians.
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was an astronomer, mathematician, translator, artist, and physicist. He is best known as the first astronomer to propose the idea of a heliocentric solar system—a system in which the planets and planetary objects orbit the sun. He described the elegant nature of our solar system as, “The Mechanism of the universe, wrought for us by a supremely good and orderly Creator …the system the best and most orderly artist of all framed for our sake.”

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer. Galileo has been called the “father of observational astronomy”, the “father of modern physics”, the “father of the scientific method” and the “father of modern science”. He is best known for defending heliocentrism and Copernicanism. He was opposed by the Catholic Church and some astronomers.
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) was a German astronomer, mathematician, and astrologer. He is a key figure in the 17th-century scientific revolution, best known for his laws of planetary motion. He saw his work as a fulfillment of his Christian duty to understand the works of God.

Francis Bacon (1561-1627) was an English philosopher, devout Anglican Christian, and statesman who served as Attorney General and as Lord Chancellor of England. His works are credited with developing the scientific method. He remained influential through the scientific revolution.
Rene Descartes (1596-1650) has been declared the first modern philosopher. He was also a famous mathematician and scientific thinker. In math, he is known for having made an important connection between geometry and algebra, which allowed for the solving of geometrical problems by way of algebraic equations. He was a devout Christian that believed his arguments provided a way for faith and reason to coexist, because faith and reason are closely bound together.

Robert Boyle (1627-1691) was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist, physicist, and inventor. Boyle is largely regarded today as the first modern chemist and one of the founders of modern chemistry, and one of the pioneers of modern experimental scientific method. He is known as the model Christian scientist that seriously considered both his faith and doubts. Ultimately, the evidence for his Christian faith outweighed his doubts. He concluded that the universe was well ordered and demonstrated God’s design.
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) is known as the father of microbiology. He developed a method for creating powerful lenses and applying them to the study of the microscopic world. He approached and viewed his work as providing evidence of the detail of the glory of God’s creation all the way down to the microscopic level.
These Christian pioneers of science believed that God designed and created the universe and life. They used their minds to investigate, determine, and explain how the universe and life operate and function.

Rosalind Picard is a current Christian pioneer in science. She is a scientist, inventor, and engineer. She is a pioneer in understanding technology and human emotion. As a leading artificial intelligence (“AI”) expert, she’s responsible for the first AI-based smart watch cleared by FDA to detect and monitor seizures. She is a Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT’s Media Lab, a faculty member of the MIT Center for Neurobiological Engineering, and has co-founded two companies.
